Violence occurs on a continuum, with peace as its opposite. And it can take place in ordered or chaotic ways. The editors of Comment thought it would be helpful to plot some of the phenomena we associate with violence or the lack of it on a graph with these axes. The world is more complicated than a graph like this could ever indicate, and many items could occur at both ends of the spectrum at once, depending, for instance, on whether you’re the one administering violence or undergoing it. But more importantly, it’s an invitation for you to reflect: What else should go on this graph, and where? What have we gotten wrong? Would you draw it using these terms or others?
