S. Joel Garver is an assistant professor of philosophy at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the city where he was raised and which he loves. Certainly, we must read the Bible with the larger church, and any radical departure from the broad sense of the faithful through the ages is a red flag for interpreters. But Wright's picture of Jesus suggests that we must always be ready for God in Christ Jesus to speak to his church anew, even if he speaks sometimes against his church.
